Who’s Calling – Part 4

Make sure you read Parts 1-3 of “Who’s Calling?” on my blog at: TheNetRev.com. I hope you enjoy Part 4 right here….Hopefully, after reading parts 1-3, you understand what a calling is and you understand you are called. If so, the next question might be, “How do you find that specific calling God has for you?” It’s simple, just “hang out” with the One who created you for that specific calling.

Around the world the question people ask me the most is, “What is my calling?” I immediately tell them 1 Corinthians 1:9 which says, “God, who has called you into fellowship with his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, is faithful” (NIV). THAT is our first calling we have on this earth. Our calling is to fellowship with Jesus! Our call is to have that upfront, personal, intimate, in your face, close enough to hear a whisper, relationship with Jesus Christ. Whenever I tell this to people they always reply, “I already know that, but I want to know who I should marry, what college I should go to, what is my career supposed to be, things like that?”

The moment they say this I realize, “They didn’t get what I told them.” First Corinthians 1:9 says, we are “called” into fellowship with Jesus; that means spending time with Him. When we do this with our heart and in a sincere and consistent way, He will gladly “direct” us in the “specifics” of our calling.

When God does say something directly to me about those “specifics” it’s usually not in some kind of BOOMING angelic voice. The majority of the time God gives me direction while I’m just “hanging out” with Him in the Secret Place. I am getting to know Him and possibly not even thinking about receiving something from Him. It’s then when I will have something “pop out” from the Word of God. Or, maybe I am listening to some worship music, just me and God alone, by ourselves. I will feel a “tug” or a “nudge” in my spirit about something that I know did not come from me.

Always remember, sheep follow their shepherd. They don’t necessarily follow only his voice, although that does happen. Oftentimes, they are simply following him so closely they know when to go left or right because they “see” him. They follow his lead. We need to do the same. We need to be so close to Jesus that He can’t even turn left without tripping over us at His feet. Stay close and follow the Leader.

When I use the term, “God has a calling on your life” don’t think it’s some random “luck of the draw” kind of thing. No, God has a specific calling for you that is as unique as the fingerprints on your hand. Even though God called me to preach, and there are thousands of preachers in the world, He made me unique. Other people may be preachers but they don’t preach like I do. They also won’t reach the people God has for me to reach. Does that make me better or worse than them? No, it just makes me someone who God created and placed here on this earth to fulfill a specific thing for His glory.

No one else can do what God called me to do in the way He called me to do it, except me. That is, me as I am surrendered and obedient to His calling. God shows up in me and in YOU for a reason. If we neglect His calling He has placed on us, there is a unique part of God the world will never see while here on earth. Our uniqueness and calling allow the world to see HIM so they can be drawn to HIM.

Here is my thought, I don’t want to be the bottleneck that stops up the whole process, do you? I don’t think so. I want to fulfill my calling, whether it gets hard or not, so someone else can find and fulfill their calling. I want to be a disciple who makes disciples, that will make disciples. I pray you have that same desire!

So, is my calling the same as my purpose? Technically speaking, it probably is. There is one thing that we must understand though. A calling gives the idea that “someone else” has something to do with it, whereas, a purpose is usually spoken of in a possessive way. It is usually coupled together with the idea that it’s “my purpose.” I know I am splitting hairs but hear me out. If I seek out “my” purpose and I do not see it as “His” purpose for me, then I end up doing my own thing, which never works out. A “calling” makes a person realize there must be someone else involved. Someone is doing the calling.

My wife and I never asked our kids “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Instead, we would say, “What do you feel God wants you to be when you grow up?” We were training them to know God’s calling and purpose for their lives instead of their own. There are good ideas and God ideas. We always wanted God ideas for ourselves and our kids… and now our grand-kids. Good is never good enough when compared to God. We shouldn’t settle for anything less than God’s calling for our lives.

Listen, God planned for YOU to be here. He planned YOU with a calling. HE called YOU to be here and HE has a calling for YOU to fulfill while YOU are here on earth. So rest assured, if you are reading this sentence, have no doubt whatsoever, Someone greater than yourself has called YOU. And that someone is God. His calling satisfies every desire in your heart way more than any purpose you may have created for yourself. All you have to do is trust Him.

Stay tuned for Part 3.

Who’s Calling? – Part 1

I believe every Christian (and even those who haven’t accepted Him yet) has a calling given to them by God Himself. Otherwise, He would have brought them up to heaven the minute they got saved. Why would a loving Father keep His newly adopted child on earth instead of bringing them home to heaven, unless they had a particular role to play on earth? We have to realize God is a Master Planner. He PLANNED for you and me to be here.

So, what is a calling? Well, Biblically speaking, a calling is something given to us by God. It is something He had in mind even before we were in our mother’s womb. (Jer. 1:5; Eph. 1:4) Knowing this alone ought to make us want to know our calling. Who can satisfy the desire of the creature better than the One who made the creature to fulfill a specific calling? The answer? No one even comes close to knowing what satisfies us like God.

When God called me to preach in 1984 I felt kind of like Moses, and said, “Are You crazy?” (With all due respect of course.) I am the one who was so terrified of people it took Valium to get me on stage in a fifth grade play. I am the one who ended up in the psychiatric ward behind lock and key for depression, spurred on from a fear of people. I am the one who was so fearful of people it put me in the hospital for tests time after time with stomach problems. And YOU want ME to preach? Are You crazy? No, He is not crazy. In fact, He is just confident. He is confident that when surrendered, His creation can fulfill the “calling” He put on their life because HE does it THROUGH them. As I approach my thirtieth year of preaching I am living proof of this.

SO…….what about you? Have you surrendered yourself to God’s calling on your life? Or, are you still trying to work it out all by yourself? If so, how’s that working out for you? Do yourself a favor and surrender to the ultimate life-coach, Jesus Christ. I can assure you, it’s the right choice if you want REAL LIFE and not just “existence” while living on this earth.

Next I will talk about the difference between a calling and a purpose. Stay tuned……
