Borrowed Faith

OK, this short little story may be scary to some, however, it’s straight from the Bible and holds a great truth for today. Check this out….. Some Jews used to travel from place to place and force evil spirits out of people. They tried to use the name of the Lord Jesus to force evil spirits out of those who were possessed. These Jews would say, “I order you to come out in the name of Jesus, whom Paul (The Apostle) talks about.” But the evil spirit answered them, “I know Jesus, and I’m acquainted with Paul, but WHO ARE YOU?” Then the man possessed by the evil spirit attacked them. He beat them up so badly that they ran out of that house naked and wounded. (Acts 19:13-16 GW)

Wow! Here’s the great truth from this story. “It’s impossible to have authority over the devil by using BORROWED faith.” There were seven sons of a man named, Sceva, and a Jewish chief priest that “tried” to deliver this demon-possessed man. Obviously, they had no faith of their own. But….they had seen Paul do it successfully, so they threw out the name of Jesus and Paul. Name-dropping doesn’t work in the spiritual realm, even if it’s the name of Jesus. WHAT??? Yes, it’s true. The name of Jesus only has power when we BELIEVE in that name and EVERYTHING it represents; like He’s the Son of God, His death on a cross, His resurrection, and He’s the Savior of the world.

So, how does this apply in our lives today? We live in an “I GOT THIS” society. If we can Google it, we can do it. Well, just turn on your T.V. and watch the news tonight and you will see that “we ain’t got this.” Jesus gave us HIS authority over every demonic force on earth, even over satan himself; who is doing his best to steal, kill, and destroy everything that God created. And that means YOU. So many Christians, who either don’t know or don’t use their authority, leave an “open door” for the devil to wreak havoc. It’s time for every Christian to blow the dust off their Bibles and realize the authority Jesus has given to us. FAITH comes from hearing (not borrowing) the message, and the message that is heard is what Christ spoke. Dive into your Bible and see your “Jesus help me!” prayers turn into “It is written….” declarations.

Enough is enough isn’t it? I’m sure it is. Remember, the devil will keep wreaking havoc in your life until he knows, that YOU know, that he has no authority over your life.

In Him,
Pastor Kevin Kinchen
