Around the world the two questions people ask me the most, are: “What is my calling?” and “What is my purpose here on earth?” I immediately tell them about First Corinthians 1:9 which says, “God, who has called you into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, is faithful” (NIV). THAT is our first calling, our number one purpose, we have on this earth. Our calling is to fellowship with Jesus! Our call is to have that upfront, personal, intimate, in your face, close enough to hear a whisper, relationship with Jesus Christ. Whenever I tell this to people they always reply, “I already know that, but I want to know who I should marry, what college I should go to, what is my career supposed to be, things like that.”
The moment they say this I realize, “They didn’t get what I told them.” First Corinthians 1:9 says, we are “called” into fellowship with Jesus; that means spending time with Him. The God’s Word Bible says, “He (God) called you to be partners with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.” That means we are in this together. When we do this with our heart, and in a sincere and consistent way, He will gladly “direct” us in the “specifics” of our calling.
So, how do we “fellowship” with someone we cannot see? Through His Word, the Bible. Read it, study it, say it, pray it, receive it, and believe it. Also through worship. Worship ushers in the tangible presence of God. And when your in the presence of God, just be still and be quiet and….listen. Finally, you fellowship with Jesus through your prayers. Prayer is you talking to Him. You get to know people when you talk to them. But make sure you hang around long enough so He can talk to you.
Remember, first things first. Fellowship will grow the relationship. Then, “specifics” will follow.
