The value is in the signature not the ball.

When my two boys were in high school at at our Christian school they needed someone to coach their soccer team. Though I loved the game I knew nothing about the rules or the strategies, however, I did know something about team building. So, I agreed to be their coach. If nothing else it would be a great opportunity to spend more time with my boys. Well, believe it or not we won district and went to the state finals. (I had the best soccer players ever!) We didn’t take first place but we did create quite the buzz in our church community and among the coaches who knew that “I knew nothing.”

When the school’s annual Live Auction fundraiser came around we decided to donate a new soccer ball that the whole team signed. We thought a parent might buy it for the sentimental value. I was hoping for maybe one-hundred dollars or so. To my surprise it sold for more than TWO-THOUSAND DOLLARS!

What made this soccer ball so valuable? After all, it was just a normal soccer ball. The value was in THE SIGNATURES “attached” to the ball, not the ball all by itself. That is how we are as Christians. Yes, we have value. But, what gives us that high-dollar kind of value is the signature of Jesus Christ that He has inscribed on each one of us. In Matthew 16:23-24, Jesus says, “…..I tell you the truth, you will ask the Father directly, and he will grant your request because you use my name. You haven’t done this before. Ask, using my name, and you will receive, and you will have abundant joy.” (NLT)

Always remember, you aren’t just some normal run-of-the-mill average Joe. You are a Christian, a child of the Most High God, a King’s kid, a person who has been marked by the signature of Jesus Christ. The value is in THE SIGNATURE “attached” to you. Live your life like you’re worth something because the truth is, you are worth EVERYTHING to Jesus!

In Him,

Pastor Kevin Kinchen

  1. Kevin, I am so proud of that soccer ball, I still have it & it is in a case for protection. It was wonderful having you be MP & the team’s coach. A Godly man teaching sports was an eventful season indeed. The Lord showed His hand in many ways & the young men on the team learned valuable lessons as well as we parents. Thank you for your time during that season, and as their Youth Pastor then & ever since. We thank God for you, Pastor Kevin, and all your work for His Kingdom. Thank you for the wonderful idea you had for the ball to be auctioned off!!!! MP can have it after I go to heaven but now it is still a conversational piece that I get to Glorify the Lord & His Goodness.
