Who’s Driving?

Mark 8:31-35 MSG – He then began explaining things to them: “It is necessary that the Son of Man proceed to an ordeal of suffering, be tried and found guilty by the elders, high priests, and religion scholars, be killed, and after three days rise up alive.”  (32)  He said this simply and clearly so they couldn’t miss it. But Peter grabbed Him in protest.  (33)  Turning and seeing his disciples wavering, wondering what to believe, Jesus confronted Peter. “Peter, get out of my way! Satan, get lost! You have no idea how God works.”  (34)  Calling the crowd to join His disciples, He said, “Anyone who intends to come with Me has to let Me lead. You’re not in the driver’s seat; I am. Don’t run from suffering; embrace it. Follow Me and I’ll show you how.  (35)  Self-help is no help at all. Self-sacrifice is the way, My way, to saving yourself, your true self.”

Back+seat+driver

Have you ever tried to drive with a back-seat driver? Especially when you KNOW where you are going and they don’t have a clue! It can be very frustrating to say the least. With that being said, I have to wonder if Jesus gets frustrated with us, His children, His disciples. I know, He’s too patient to get frustrated, but think about it…..

Just a few verses before this Peter received the awesome revelation of WHO Jesus really was. I mean he HAD JUST RECEIVED THAT REVELATION of who He was. And all the sudden, Peter is grabbing Jesus by the arm in protest as if he knows “the way” better than Jesus. I’m pretty sure Jesus knows more about “His own way” than Peter, right? Right. However…

…How many times have ALL OF US done the same thing? The Holy Spirit will show us “the way we should go” and yet we go the opposite way; for a multitude of reasons. OR, we go, but we go doing it the way WE think is best….you know, the way that makes sense, the logical way. We soon find out that our way never succeeds at the level HE designed for us to achieve.

Folks, Jesus said, “You have no idea how God works. Anyone who intends to come with Me has to let Me lead. You’re not in the driver’s seat; I am.” For me, I pray and believe that I have finally come to the realization that, “Father knows best.” How about you? Who’s driving…….your life? your marriage? your family? your finances? your job? your ministry? your struggles? It’s time to scoot on over and truly, “let Jesus take the wheel.” Remember, we as the passengers, get to enjoy the journey no matter where it goes ONLY when we give THE DRIVER our complete trust.

This message brought to you “fresh” from the feet (yes my actual feet; giving new meaning to the verse “How beautiful are the feet of the messengers who announce the Good News”) of me, Pastor Kevin Kinchen, as I boldly proclaim that NOTHING is impossible with God! Luke 1:37
