On the road someone asked if he could go along. “I’ll go with you, wherever, ” he said. Jesus was curt: “Are you ready to rough it? We’re not staying in the best inns, you know.”Jesus said to another, “Follow me.” He said, “Certainly, BUT FIRST excuse me for a couple of days, please. I have to make arrangements for my father’s funeral.” Jesus refused. “First things first. Your business is life, not death. And life is urgent: Announce God’s kingdom!” Then another said, “I’m ready to follow you, Master, BUT FIRST excuse me while I get things straightened out at home.” Jesus said, “No procrastination. No backward looks. You can’t put God’s kingdom off till tomorrow. Seize the day.” Luke 9:57-62 (MSG)
Notice that two of the people who wanted to follow Jesus used the words, “BUT FIRST…” When they said this Jesus replied, “First things first…” to one. And to the other, “No procrastination. No backward looks. You can’t put God’s kingdom off till tomorrow. Seize the day.” There is no debate when it comes to FIRST PLACE in the life of a Christian. Either Jesus IS first place or He is NOT. No grey area. No lukewarm temperature. It’s either yes or no. There’s no room for TWO first place positions in the life of a believer. In Matthew, Jesus says, “Don’t ever worry and say, ‘What are we going to eat?’ or ‘What are we going to drink?’ or ‘What are we going to wear?’ Everyone is concerned about these things, and your heavenly Father certainly knows you need all of them. BUT FIRST, be concerned about his kingdom and what has his approval. Then all these things will be provided for you. (Matthew 6:31-33 GWT)
I pray Jesus is your ONLY first place! When we allow Him to occupy that position in our life….HE takes care of everything else. Trust Him. He has proven to be more than faithful when we trust Him and have actions that show we are trusting Him. Amen? Amen!
