Please keep praying for this kidney stone to “pass.” It has definitely moved and is working its way down. Drinking lots of water, water, and more water! Ugh! Meanwhile, I pressed through and got something great from the Lord as I spent time with Him this morning. He amazes me. Enjoy!
John 2:1-11 (MSG)
Three days later there was a wedding in the village of Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there. Jesus and his disciples were guests also. When they started running low on wine at the wedding banquet, Jesus’ mother told him, “They’re just about out of wine.” Jesus said, “Is that any of our business, Mother—yours or mine? This isn’t my time. Don’t push me.” She went ahead anyway, telling the servants, “Whatever he tells you, do it.” Six stoneware water pots were there, used by the Jews for ritual washings. Each held twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus ordered the servants, “Fill the pots with water.” And they filled them to the brim. “Now fill your pitchers and take them to the host,” Jesus said, and they did. When the host tasted the water that had become wine (he didn’t know what had just happened but the servants, of course, knew), he called out to the bridegroom, “Everybody I know begins with their finest wines and after the guests have had their fill brings in the cheap stuff. But you’ve saved the best till now!” This act in Cana of Galilee was the first sign Jesus gave, the first glimpse of his glory. And his disciples believed in him.
Jesus had performed no miracles until this one. Yet, Mary evidently knew He both could and would do them. That’s why she said, “They’re just about out of wine.” She EXPECTED HIM to do something about it. And because Jesus “learned obedience,” He obeyed. (Hebrews 5:8) In 1 Samuel it says, “To obey is better than sacrifice.” (1 Samuel 15:22)
The last few verses said, “This ACT in Cana was the first sign Jesus gave, the first glimpse of His GLORY. And His disciples believed Him.” What was the ACT He performed? It was the miracle of turning water into wine, of course. But, it was ALSO the ACT of obedience to authority…His mother. How is obedience part of this act? It says this act was the first glimpse of His GLORY. Miracles are definitely part of the glory of Jesus. We sometimes forget that OBEDIENCE is also part of His glory. Jesus had learned obedience and so should we. Jesus also said He ONLY did what His Father told Him; that’s obedience. I have a feeling that when Mary mentioned the wine, the Father whispered in the ear of Jesus these words, “Obey your mother!”
Let’s learn from this. Believe for the miraculous but learn obedience too. Remember, “The miraculous can always be found on the trail of obedience….”
