I’m Ready To Shut-Up And LISTEN!

Good morning and welcome to The E-quip Devotion. For the past few days I have been focusing on “THE GREATNESS OF GOD.” You know, my new book, “The Secret Place, Revealed” is all about you and me cultivating an intimate REALationship with God through Jesus Christ. (By the way…the book is at the printer right now…it won’t be long!) BUT, even though we KNOW God, that does not mean we know all His ways, or the extent of His creativity, the purpose behind His every action, the magnitude of His greatness, or even the depth of His plan for us. We cannot predict what He is up to and we have no clue of the full power that can be found in His glory. Because of all these things, we humans tend to bring God’s greatness down to a human level. Not good. As we focus on what GOD SAYS about His own greatness, it’s God’s Spirit in us, the breath of the Almighty One, that makes wise human insight possible. Even then, it will take all of eternity to fully grasp the full picture of how great our God is.

What’s my point? I think we limit God’s greatness in our life by only allowing Him to do what WE can figure out. Come on, we have all said, “How could God fix THIS one?” Or maybe, “I just can’t see any way out of this!” Maybe we’ve mumbled, “God must not be listening to me, I must have done something wrong.” How do we KNOW these things? Is God limited to what WE think HE can do? I think we know the answer. God is BIGGER than anything at all we will ever face. You know, Job made some pretty intense statements in his assessment of what God was “doing to him.” Check out some of the conversation in the last chapters of the Book of Job…

“And now, finally, GOD answered Job from the eye of a violent storm. He said: “Why do you confuse the issue? Why do you talk without knowing what you’re talking about? Pull yourself together, Job! Up on your feet! Stand tall! I have some questions for you, and I want some straight answers. (Job 38:1-3 MSG – Followed by approx. 25 questions from God in chapter 38 alone.) After many many questions about HOW God does things, Job says, “I’m speechless, in awe–words fail me. I should never have opened my mouth! I’ve talked too much, way too much. I’m ready to shut up and listen.” (Job 40:4-5 MSG) OOOOOOOOOHHHHHH, HOW WE NEED TO TAKE JOB’S ADVICE HERE and “Shut-up and listen!!!”

I know that is harsh, but still, it’s true. In chapter 41 Job finally says, “I’m convinced: You can do anything and everything. Nothing and no one can upset Your plans. You asked, ‘Who is this muddying the water, ignorantly confusing the issue, second-guessing my purposes?’ I admit it. I was the one. I babbled on about things far beyond me, made small talk about wonders way over my head. You told me, ‘Listen, and let me do the talking. Let me ask the questions. You give the answers.’ I admit I once lived by rumors of you; now I have it all firsthand–from my own eyes and ears! I’m sorry–forgive me. I’ll never do that again, I promise! I’ll never again live on crusts of hearsay, crumbs of rumor.” (Job 42:2-6 MSG)

THAT is sooooooooo good! I don’t know about you, but for me, it’s time to “shut-up and listen” (to God) and to, “never again live on crusts of hearsay, crumbs of rumor.” That means crusts of hearsay that even WE have come up with and reasoned as truth. It’s time to READ the Word of God, RECEIVE the Word of God, and BELIEVE the Word of God. And as we SPEAK what we believe, what the truth of God’s Word says, we will SEE THE INCREDIBLE GREATNESS OF OUR GOD!!! Do what Job did and “get it all firsthand–from my own eyes and ears!” Spend time with God today…LISTENING.
