The doing, the cost, the details, or the WHO.

Good morning and welcome to The E-quip Devotion. I just read the following verses…Jesus was in Bethany in the home of Simon, a man who had suffered from a skin disease. While Jesus was sitting there, a woman went to him with a bottle of very expensive perfume and poured it on his head. The disciples were irritated when they saw this. They asked, “Why did she waste it like this? It could have been sold for a high price, and the money could have been given to the poor.” Since Jesus knew what was going on, he said to them, “Why are you bothering this woman? She has done a beautiful thing for me. You will always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me with you. She poured this perfume on my body before it is placed in a tomb. I can guarantee this truth: Wherever this Good News is spoken in the world, what she has done will also be told in memory of her.” (Matthew 26:6-13 GW)

According to commentaries that are way smarter than me, this is the same “Mary” that is mentioned along with her sister, Martha, in Luke 10:38-42. In these verses Martha had been busy, busy, busy trying to make everything perfect for Jesus who was visiting at her house. Meanwhile, Mary was sitting at the feet of Jesus LISTENING to Him talk. Martha complained about this but Jesus replied, “Martha, Martha! You worry and fuss about a lot of things. There’s only one thing you need. Mary has made the right choice, and that one thing will not be taken away from her.”

It’s kind of funny, the disciples, who were supposed to be closest to Jesus, were the ones complaining about the “cost” of the “bottle of expensive perfume.” They said it was a “waste.” ONCE AGAIN, Jesus had to impart the importance of TIME WITH HIM. That is the ONE THING all of us need to be reminded of…constantly. We tend to get so wrapped up in the doing, or the cost, or the details of things, instead of the WHO of the things. The WHO is JESUS. It’s all about HIM. It’s all about the relationship you and I have with Him. Don’t neglect that. It’s more important than anything in your life. It’s the ONE THING, the ONLY THING, that you and I cannot live without. Treat your relationship with Jesus as if it were oxygen, something necessary for life itself. It’s not an option for us. I can do without a car, without a new pair of jeans, but I CANNOT do anything without Jesus. He IS life.

Spend time with LIFE today. Spend time with JESUS.

In Him,

Pastor Kevin
